Plan a road trip with ChatGPT: route, breaks and itinerary
Plan a road trip with ChatGPT using a copyable prompt and a nine-day Florida example. Check nights, driving and route details, then keep the itinerary in Compi.
By Compi6 min read

Give ChatGPT your dates, confirmed bookings and driving limit before asking it to fill a road trip with attractions. Start with a table of days and overnight stays, then check the route. Once you have access to Compi and have connected it in ChatGPT, you can ask the chat to save the agreed plan to Compi.
“Nine relaxed days in Florida” leaves a surprisingly large gap between what you and the chat imagine. You may mean three beach afternoons; the chat may suggest a different hotel every night. I'd make “relaxed” measurable: a quiet day, no more than four bases and a return towards the airport before departure day.
Start with this copyable prompt#
Replace the details in square brackets. The route below is an editorial example based on our template, not a recorded ChatGPT test result:
Help me plan a nine-day family road trip starting and ending in Miami, from [start date] to [end date]. Arrival and departure count as days. We are [adults] and a child aged [age]. Confirmed bookings: [flights/stays or none]. We like nature and water. Use no more than four accommodation bases. Aim for no more than 150 minutes of driving per day, with breaks added separately. Include one quiet day and the final night near Miami Airport. Ask about missing information first. Then show a table with dates, main ideas, driving and overnight areas. Label driving times as estimates, keep suggestions unbooked and leave unknown prices blank.
The 150-minute limit is our chosen driving limit for this example. Change it to suit your family. Add exclusions too: “no boat trips”, “no theme parks” or “no daily accommodation moves” gives the chat useful boundaries.
For an initial route, flight times, local arrival dates and the area of an existing booking are enough. You do not need to paste passport numbers or complete booking emails into the conversation. Add private details deliberately when a particular task needs them.
What a useful plan could look like: nine days, eight nights#
This outline follows the Florida sample trip offered below. The accommodation areas are suggestions rather than reserved properties. Replace the day numbers with the local dates of your own journey.
| Day | Main idea | Overnight base |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive in Miami, collect the car, reach the accommodation | Coconut Grove |
| 2 | South Pointe Park; Wynwood as an optional extra | Coconut Grove |
| 3 | Little Havana, then move to Homestead | Homestead |
| 4 | Everglades visitor centre and Anhinga Trail | Homestead |
| 5 | Biscayne morning, then continue to Key Largo | Key Largo |
| 6 | John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, beach or rest | Key Largo |
| 7 | Quiet day; a boat trip remains optional | Key Largo |
| 8 | Return towards Miami Airport and pack | Airport area |
| 9 | Return the hire car and fly home | no further night |
The arithmetic matters: two nights in Coconut Grove, two in Homestead, three on Key Largo and one near the airport. That is eight nights at four bases. A missing night is easier to spot here than in nine cheerful paragraphs.
Follow up with: “Identify the two busiest days and remove one optional activity from each. Keep confirmed accommodation unchanged.” If day two is too full, drop the explicitly optional Wynwood visit first. Do not let the quiet day quietly inherit every deleted activity.
Put driving and breaks into the day#
The Florida template contains these editorial driving estimates for selected transfers. They are not live journey times or complete totals for all driving on a day:
| Day | Section | Driving estimate in the template |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Miami Airport → Coconut Grove | about 35 minutes |
| 3 | Little Havana → Homestead | about 65 minutes |
| 5 | Biscayne → Key Largo | about 60 minutes |
| 8 | Key Largo → Miami Airport | about 90 minutes |
Add journeys to attractions, parking and breaks. For day eight, you could budget 90 minutes of driving, a 45-minute break and a 30-minute shop: 165 minutes, or two hours and 45 minutes, before reaching the accommodation. The break and shopping time are chosen allowances. Your actual addresses and traffic determine the final schedule.
Follow up with: “For each day, separate driving, journeys to attractions and breaks. Flag days exceeding our driving limit and suggest a stop to remove. Keep rest breaks intact.”
Find three common errors before saving#
The wrong place: ask for the full name, address and locality of each stop. A complete park name on Key Largo is more useful than “Pennekamp”. Open the locations in a mapping service and look at their order.
An optimistic journey: route between actual addresses. Driving time usually leaves out lunch, parking and the supermarket. A 90-minute drive plus a 45-minute break and a 30-minute shop already uses two hours and 45 minutes.
Missing road conditions: Florida's official FDOT information about FL511 points to current traffic and roadworks information. Check the planned journey in a mapping service and the available notices before driving. A closure or substantial delay may mean dropping a stop or changing route.
Ask the chat to keep unresolved facts as questions. You can work with a missing answer. A confident invented answer is much harder to notice.
Keep the checked road trip in Compi#
Once the days and nights add up, the saving and sharing guide explains the next step: a configured ChatGPT or Claude connection, or the guided “Paste plan” route. A viewing link lets other travellers look up the trip without a ChatGPT or Compi account; it does not grant editing access. Find more planning requests in the five holiday prompts.
Your first trip currently includes the full travel companion free of charge. You can plan up to two trips as free drafts; further trips need Plus for the full travel companion. See the plans and pricing for current access.
Turn the sample into your own trip#
Add the Florida sample trip to your Compi below for places, daily ideas, accommodation areas and a packing list. Its example dates are 14–22 November 2026. Choose your start date when adding it: Compi shifts the end date, daily entries, accommodation dates and dated lists together. Afterwards, check weekdays, opening days and the bookings your own journey needs.
Before leaving, open the current unlocked trip on your travel device and check that you can read it in aeroplane mode. New chat requests, the public viewing link and synchronisation need internet access. A useful first draft needs the right days, every night accounted for and a little space between the things you want to do.
Frequently asked questions
What should a road trip prompt include?
Provide dates, travellers, confirmed bookings and limits for driving and accommodation moves. Ask for missing information first, followed by a table of days and overnight stays.
How many nights are in a nine-day road trip?
Arriving on day one and leaving on day nine gives eight nights at the destination. Account separately for overnight flights and local arrival dates.
Can ChatGPT save the road trip directly in Compi?
Yes, with a configured connection and an explicit save request. Without one, use Paste plan in Compi and its supplied transfer prompt.
What can I use for free in Compi?
You can plan up to two trips as free drafts. Your first trip currently includes the full travel companion free of charge. Further trips need Plus for features such as lists, sharing and offline lookup; see the homepage for plans and pricing.
How do I use the Florida template for different dates?
Choose your start date when adding the template. Compi shifts the end date, daily entries, accommodation dates and dated lists together. Then check that activities and opening days fit your new dates.
